GATE Participating Colleges 2026: The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is one of India’s most important entrance examinations for students seeking admission to postgraduate engineering and technology programmes. A valid GATE score can be used for admission to M.Tech, M.E., M.Arch, M.Plan and other postgraduate programmes offered by several premier institutes across India.
Students who qualify in GATE can apply to institutions such as IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs, state universities and selected private institutions. However, the admission process is not the same for every institute. Depending on the college, students may have to apply through COAP, CCMT or the respective institute/university counselling process.

Top GATE Participating Institutes in India
Several reputed institutions accept GATE scores for postgraduate admissions. These include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded technical institutions.
IITs and IISc
The IITs and IISc are among the most preferred destinations for GATE-qualified candidates seeking M.Tech and other postgraduate programmes.
Some of the prominent institutions include:
- IIT Bombay
- IIT Delhi
- IIT Madras
- IIT Kanpur
- IIT Kharagpur
- IIT Roorkee
- IIT Hyderabad
- IIT Guwahati
- IIT BHU
- IISc Bengaluru
Admission to participating IITs and IISc programmes generally involves the institute’s admission process along with COAP for accepting and comparing offers.
Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP)
The Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) is an important platform for candidates seeking postgraduate admissions in participating IITs and IISc.
COAP allows eligible candidates to view admission offers from participating institutes and make decisions regarding those offers.
However, candidates should remember that COAP itself is not an admission application portal. Students generally need to apply separately to the individual IITs or IISc according to their admission notifications.
Therefore, GATE-qualified candidates should:
- Check the eligibility criteria of the preferred institute.
- Apply separately to the respective IIT/IISc admission portal.
- Register on COAP when required.
- Check admission offers through COAP.
- Accept, retain or decline offers according to the available options and deadlines.
NITs, IIITs and CFTIs
Another major group of GATE participating colleges includes NITs, IIITs and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs).
Admissions to many of these institutes are coordinated through CCMT – Centralized Counselling for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan.
Some prominent institutes include:
- NIT Tiruchirappalli (NIT Trichy)
- NIT Karnataka, Surathkal
- NIT Warangal
- NIT Rourkela
- NIT Calicut
- NIT Durgapur
- NIT Jaipur
- NIT Kurukshetra
- NIT Allahabad
- IIIT Allahabad
- Other participating NITs, IIITs and CFTIs
CCMT – Centralized Counselling for M.Tech Admissions
CCMT is the centralized counselling platform through which eligible candidates can seek admission to participating NITs, IIITs and CFTIs based on their valid GATE scores.
The general CCMT admission process includes:
- Online registration
- Payment of counselling fees
- Filling of preferred institutes and programmes
- Choice locking
- Seat allotment
- Seat acceptance
- Document verification
- Reporting at the allotted institute
Candidates should carefully check the participating-institute list and programme-wise eligibility before filling their choices.
GATE Colleges Beyond IITs and NITs
GATE is not limited to IITs and NITs. Several other universities and technical institutions may also accept GATE scores for postgraduate admissions.
These may include:
- State universities
- Deemed universities
- Private universities
- University engineering colleges
- Other technical institutions
Examples of institutions that may accept GATE scores or conduct their own admission process include BITS Pilani, VIT Vellore, JNTUH and Osmania University.
The admission procedure can vary significantly from one institution to another. Therefore, candidates should check the official admission notification of the respective institute before applying.
GATE Participating Colleges – Admission Routes
| Institute Category | Examples | Admission Route |
|---|---|---|
| IITs | IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras | Institute application + COAP |
| IISc | IISc Bengaluru | Institute application + COAP |
| NITs | NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal | CCMT |
| IIITs | Participating IIITs | CCMT/Institute process |
| CFTIs | Participating CFTIs | CCMT/Institute process |
| State Universities | JNTUH, Osmania University | State/University process |
| Private/Deemed Universities | BITS Pilani, VIT Vellore and others | Individual institute process |
Can GATE Score Be Used for PSU Recruitment?
Yes. Apart from postgraduate admissions, a valid GATE score can also be useful for Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) recruitment.
Several PSUs have historically used GATE scores as one of the criteria for recruitment to engineering positions. Examples include:
- ONGC
- IOCL
- NTPC
- Other participating PSUs
However, PSU recruitment is separate from GATE counselling. Each organisation decides its own eligibility criteria, GATE paper requirements, cut-offs, recruitment process and selection methodology.
Candidates should therefore check the official recruitment notification of the concerned PSU.
GATE College Selection: What Should Students Check?
Qualifying GATE alone does not guarantee admission to every participating institute. Candidates should consider several factors before preparing their college preference list.
1. GATE Cut-Off
Check the previous admission cut-offs and expected competition for the desired programme.
2. GATE Paper and Specialization
A candidate’s GATE paper should match the eligibility requirements of the programme. Different institutes may have different accepted GATE papers.
3. Academic Eligibility
Institutes may prescribe specific requirements regarding the candidate’s qualifying degree, percentage/CGPA and subject background.
4. Specialization
Students should carefully compare available M.Tech or related specializations rather than selecting an institute solely based on its name.
5. Placements
Placement records, recruiters, average packages and career opportunities should be considered before selecting a programme.
6. Fees and Financial Assistance
Students should compare tuition fees, hostel expenses and other costs. Eligible GATE-qualified postgraduate students may also be able to receive financial assistance or scholarships subject to the applicable rules.
7. Location and Campus Facilities
Infrastructure, laboratories, research facilities, hostel availability and campus location can also influence the final decision.
COAP vs CCMT – What Is the Difference?
Many GATE aspirants get confused between COAP and CCMT. The basic difference is:
| Feature | COAP | CCMT |
|---|---|---|
| Full Form | Common Offer Acceptance Portal | Centralized Counselling for M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan |
| Mainly associated with | IITs and IISc | NITs, IIITs and CFTIs |
| Purpose | Admission offer management | Centralized counselling and seat allotment |
| Separate institute application | Generally required | Counselling registration covers participating institutes subject to rules |
| Seat allotment | Admission offers through participating institutes | Centralized seat allotment |
Important: Candidates should always read the latest official admission instructions because the process and participating institutes can change from year to year.
GATE Participating Colleges: Important Points
Before applying for any GATE college, candidates should remember these points:
- A GATE qualification does not automatically guarantee admission.
- Each institute can have its own eligibility criteria.
- GATE cut-offs can vary by institute, programme and category.
- COAP and CCMT serve different groups of institutions.
- Candidates may need to apply separately to IITs/IISc.
- NITs and other CCMT participating institutes generally follow the CCMT counselling process.
- State and private universities may have their own admission procedures.
- PSU recruitment through GATE is separate from postgraduate counselling.
- Always verify programme eligibility before submitting choices.
Conclusion
GATE opens up multiple opportunities for engineering graduates beyond simply qualifying for the examination. Candidates can use their GATE scores to compete for postgraduate admissions at some of India’s leading institutions, including IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and other technical institutions.
For IITs and IISc, candidates should understand the role of COAP, while students targeting NITs, IIITs and participating CFTIs should be familiar with CCMT counselling. Candidates interested in state or private universities should check the respective institution’s admission process.
Choosing the right college should not be based only on the GATE cut-off. Students should also compare specialization, placements, fees, research opportunities, scholarships/financial assistance, infrastructure and career prospects before making their final choice.
